故事是發生在1895年的加拿大，主人公默多克是個年輕英俊的偵探，他的破案手段在當時看來都是非傳統的，但卻破獲了一宗又一宗案件，他的上司雖然對他破案手法不屑一顧，但每次破案後又對自己有這麽一個下屬感到沾沾自喜，但病理學家卻對默多克的破案手法很是欣賞，同時為他破案也提供很多 幫助，而默多克也對她日漸迷戀，但又難以啟齒。
